 The Toltecs often refer to the Nagual and the Tonal. In practical terms what are the Nagual and the Tonal. We can give theories about them and our heads love to hear theories and turn them into beliefs, but unless the knowledge is practical, knowledge that we can apply it is not more than candy for the reason. Our reason loves to figure things out. We love to have answers. The truth is that real personal growth and spiritual evolution comes from the experience of the DOING of the processes and techniques. Giving information and ideas doesn’t add much to personal growth and, if we only take in more knowledge without applying it, it can actually do more harm than good. But, that being said most of us love to hear and read knowledge, and to keep the mental body engaged we supply candy for the reason.

 In a nutshell the Nagual is all that is. Toltecs sometimes describe the Tonal as an island in the infinite sea of the Nagual. The Tonal is everything we know. In terms of energy the Tonal is structured energy, or form. It is a condensation of the Nagual. All that is the Tonal comes from the Nagual. It is the Nagual manifest. The Nagual is unstructured. It has no form. It is both chaos and emptiness.

 The focus of the Toltec Path is our personal growth, evolution and empowerment. To this end we focus on the human aspects of the Nagual and the Tonal - how they apply to us. Using this structure we are able to increase our awareness of who and what we are. As human beings we have both Tonal aspects and Nagual aspects. Our Nagual aspects are unlimited. Our Tonal aspects are our potential. When we are fully aware of both our Tonal aspects and our Nagual aspects we have UNLIMITED POTENTIAL.

 Spirit needs structure to manifest in physicality. The human Tonal provides that structure. However, for the Nagual to fully manifest through the human Tonal the Tonal must be clean, clear, healed and strong. The Toltec Masteries of Awareness and Transformation deal with the cleaning, clearing, healing and strengthening of our tonal. We must, at least to a significant degree, complete this cleaning, clearing, healing and strengthening process before we embark on the Mastery of Intent. The Mastery of Intent deals with the Nagual aspects of Self, and aligning the Tonal to our Nagual Aspects. The Nagual aspects of self could be called our Divine Self. The Toltecs call it our Dreamer. We are the Dreamed, dreamed by the Dreamer and our life is the Dream. We can also refer to the Tonal as our HUMAN side, and the Nagual
as our BEING side. When complete we are a HUMAN BEING.

 What is the human Tonal? The human Tonal consists of three bodies, the mental body, the emotional body and the physical body. Each body has its own particular function. The mental body’s function is to think and picture. On a deeper level its purpose is to structure essences of the Nagual. The emotional body’s function is to feel. The physical body’s function is to act and experience.

 In the Mastery of Awareness it is important to become increasingly aware of each body and its function. In western society the mental body is held supreme and we often use the mental body to suppress the other bodies. This is a form of dysfunction. Sometimes we attempt to use a particular body for a function that does not belong to it. For example, many try to "feel" with their mental body. This is not the function of the mental body. It is the function of the emotional body. So, a woman asks a man how he FEELS about something, he may answer by saying, "I don’t know let me THINK about it." This is cross functioning.

 Our awareness must be able to move freely through our Tonal aspects. Many attempt to only place their awareness on their Nagual aspects. It doesn’t work. First, until we clean, clear and heal our Tonal aspects, we are not able to perceive the Nagual clearly. We risk moving into fantasy. Second we will not have enough personal power to manifest the Nagual fully in our lives. This is why some people of the New Age
generation have a tendency to be ineffectual in their lives. They can get into nice realms of energy, but their daily lives are shambles. And third, when we run high energy of the Nagual it shakes loose our unresolved emotional issues, charges and wounding. If we haven’t done the healing work necessary first, high energy of the Nagual can cause overwhelm a loss of reference points and a collapse in our inner and outer worlds. This can be a very painful and prolonged experience.

 This isn’t said to invoke fear. When my nonphysical teachers ran high frequency energy through me (they called it turning up the energy), my entire world, both inner and outer collapsed. I was in severe depression for more than 2 years. It was the most painful period in my life, but it was also the most magical.

 As the light of awareness begins to move deeper into self, it is common for repressed emotional wounding to come to the surface. Just know that this is part of the process. What we don’t want to do is to attempt to suppress what comes up. It is better to process what comes up bit by bit than attempt to push it back down into our subconscious. It we continue to avoid, deny and suppress any part of self, when we run high frequencies of the Nagual they can pushed up all at once causing a lot of pain and overwhelm.

 The good news is that once you have cleared and healed, your life, your dream begins to change dramatically. You move from the dream of the planet to the dream of heaven. You also clear the way for the Nagual to manifest in your life. Inner guidance, knowingness and "seeing" begin to show up more frequently. You are able to move your awareness freely into energetic realms, and what Toltecs call the 2nd attention. Work on our Tonal aspects isn’t always fun, but it’s well worth the effort.

 As we work to clean, clear and strengthen our tonal, our human personality, through healing our wounds, and throwing out our belief systems and preconceptions that make up our inventory, our tonal comes into its full potential. As we raise our frequency up to connect to the unlimited Nagual, we are able to bring it through the tonal and we have UNLIMITED POTENTIAL.
