The "Goodies"
are not the Goal
|

There's
a part of us that wants it all done for us. We
want Spirit, a nagual, drugs, power -- someone,
something to take us by the hand, acknowledge
how important we are, pat us on the back and tell
us they know how good we are. There have been
many times in my own life that I have cried, begged
and screamed at Sprit to give me what I want;
take me where I want to be, and tell me I'm doing
it right. It doesn't work that way. The fact is
it takes hard work and much discipline - how we
hate those words.
Some people are out
to get the "goodies." They want to "see,"
they want out-of-bodies, they want to access Silent
Knowledge. They want to dream and communicate
with other entities. The "goodies" do
come, however they come as a by-product to the
Work necessary on a spiritual path. If you are
making the "goodies" your goal, you
risk making it impossible to obtain that what
you are looking for.
One
aspect that attracted me to the Toltec path was
the emphasis on reclaiming personal power. I spent
many years getting to where I could access other
realms and calling upon "higher" energies.
I could sit down, go up and within minutes be
bathed with energy more pleasurable than an orgasm.
When sleeping-in in the morning, or after falling
asleep at night, I would often feel intense buzzing
and shaking and would be catapulted out of my
body and enter other worlds where I would exchange
communication with other beings, call them inorganic
if you like. I could lay my hands on others and
send energy vibrations pulsating through their
bodies. Because of this, I thought I was a highly
evolved person. I was hot shit.
I did this for 15
years until when about 15 years ago my world came
crashing down. Something inside of me emerged,
call it my Dreamer, and showed me the "folly
of my ways." I suddenly knew I could no longer
go on as I was. I realized I was fooling myself.
I had no personal power. I felt as insecure
and weak as I always had from the time I was a
teenager. Through my so-called spirituality
I was just building up my ego to cover up those
parts of myself I hated, those parts of fear,
weakness and feeling worthless. I had not grown
or transformed. Under the spiritual façade, I
was the same person I had always been. All
of the energy, out-of-bodies, communication with
other beings had done nothing to strengthen me,
give me true personal power, transform me closer
to the Divine. At my core, I was still as weak
as I had always been.

I had to give it all up and
go back to basics - my personal growth. I had to
delve deep into my shit with brutal honesty, move
deep into my shadows and demons cleaning, de-charging,
healing and purifying myself until I reached emptiness,
the void. It was an excruciatingly painful 7-year
process. It was truly hell.
After much work I made it
out the other side. When I did a new world
opened to me. This world was more "real"
than any I could have imagined. My conscious
connection to the Divine part of myself, my Dreamer
opened. I felt connected to the Nagual, all
that is. I no longer felt alone. Along with this
came the "seeing" and other "goodies."
However, I then realized that it was not the
"goodies" that mattered. They were merely
by-products of something much more important - transformation
and growth.
With this everything
shifted. My focus in life was my growth and transformation,
and the fulfillment of my purpose, of which I now
was keenly aware. The work didn't get any easier.
I still have and will always have issues to work
through. Working through life issues is part
of our purpose for being here. Even the highest
master can trip on a bar of soap. Through refining
and evolving our issues, self ascends. Now a part
of me is grateful for these issues, as it is the
process of working our issues through, that true
growth and strength emerge. Spirit is tricky this
way - the more personal power you accumulate, the
larger the challenges It brings to you.
Spiritual experiences don't
lead to growth. They may shift our perception and
our view of the world but they do not transform
us. This is one of the new-age myths - that
spiritual experiences will transform you.
They don't. They may inspire you. They can stretch
you. They move your assemblage point, but eventually
you will platform back to where you were. It is
only through the diligent work of personal growth,
starting with processing and healing our stuff,
that really leads to transformation.
When we grow, evolve
and reclaim our personal power, we gain dominion
over our lives (not the same thing as domination).
When we have dominion, we become truly effective
in life and are able to bring our spiritual life
down fully manifest into our daily lives. The "goodies"
are a by-product, not the goal.

Don't Make Assumptions
We all
have so many different beliefs in life; beliefs about other
people, about the way the world works, about what should or
should not happen to us, and so forth. Don’t assume that your
beliefs are correct or accurate. Instead, challenge your beliefs.
What do you belief about work? Do you believe that if you read
the “right” book, or find the “right” answer that everything
in you life will suddenly work for you? Don’t assume these
beliefs are true, even if you think you’ve seen life work this
way: challenge your beliefs and your experience of life will
change.

A
Path of Action

The
Toltec Path is often referred to as a path of action. This is
a specific reference to action because action is what brings
change in our lives.
A very common assumption that many people make is that knowledge
is power and that this is all that we require to improve our
lives. Based on this assumption, people read many great books
and learn about techniques or strategies to improve their lives,
but they don't necessarily do anything with this knowledge-
they don't apply the wisdom they read or practice the techniques
they learned.
How does knowledge that is not put into action serve us?
Our
world is a world of movement. Everything is constantly flowing
and moving through it's cycle. The seasons move from one to
the next; day turns to night; animals migrate to follow their
prey. Whether we look to nature, animals or even people, action
is at the root of all of life. If nature were to think about
changing seasons, but take no action, we could be stuck out
of balance in a perpetual summer. If a deer were to think about
greener pastures, but never move on to them, it would starve.
When we, as humans, think about improving our lives, but take
no action to do so then we get stuck in our own perpetual problems
and patterns.
Making the effort to take action in our lives is not always
easy. Often, this effort requires our energy and focus. We find
ourselves busy at work, at home and in life. We feel so busy
that we think we are taking many actions, but are these life-improving
actions or just a lot of activity? We need to be careful to
distinguish between activity that does not necessary activate
positive change in our lives, and action with the purpose of
improvement.
Taking action does not have to be difficult -we can make taking
action in our lives a simpler thing. Pick up a book or choose
a life-improving technique and stick with it for a half a year.
Refrain from being tempted to acquire more knowledge, or more
books and different techniques during this time. For this six
month period, read and re-read your book or about your technique.
Go through it at your own pace, applying the knowledge you have
gained. Try the technique or ways you learn at different times
in your life, and in different circumstances. No technique or
life strategy is mastered over night – it is important that
we spend time working with just one technique or life strategy.
When we give ourselves the time to simplify our lives with just
one technique, we also create positive change in our lives.
One technique every six months may seem slow, but in a couple
of years we will have improved in many ways, whereas acquiring
knowledge without applying it brings no life-improvements and
can even do more damage than good.
